Thomas A. Powers, Ph.D.

Thomas A. Powers, Ph.D. is currently Vice-President, Audiology & Compliance for Siemens Hearing Instruments, Inc.  Dr. Powers received his B.S. from the State University of New York at Geneseo, and his M.A. and Ph.D. in Audiology from Ohio University.  He was a partner in an Audiology private practice, and has over 30 years of experience in the hearing health care industry.  He is a fellow of the American Academy of Audiology (AAA), a member of the Academy of Dispensing Audiologists (ADA), a member of the American Speech, Language and Hearing Association (ASHA), as well as a member and served as President of the American Auditory Society (AAS) for 2004 - 2006.  In 1988, he had the unique opportunity to fit former President Ronald Reagan with Siemens hearing instruments, while he was in the White House. Dr. Powers has lectured extensively at state, national and international meetings His primary areas of interest include hearing instrument technology, outcome measures and directional microphone technology.


Calvin Staples, M.Sc., Aud

Calvin Staples has been an audiologist for 10 years. His employment history covers a wide range of experiences and skills. Currently, he is the HIS program Coordinator and faculty member at Conestoga College. His teaching responsibilities include: Professional Ethics, Audiometry and Probe tube measures. His primary interests are:  real-ear, counselling and clinical practice management. Previously, he was employed at Bernafon Canada Ltd. as their technical support and educational audiologist.  His clinical experience developed through time spent at Hamilton Health Sciences and Eastern Oklahoma Ear, Nose, and Throat. At both places Calvin’s role as a clinical audiologist dealt primarily with adult audiology and hearing aids. His education was completed at Missouri State University whereby he received a Master’s Degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders with an emphasis in Audiology.


Pamela Souza, Ph.D.

Pamela Souza received her B.S. from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and her M.S. and PhD in Audiology from Syracuse University.  She is an Associate Professor at Northwestern University and previously taught at the University of Washington, Seattle.  Throughout her career she has combined her academic teaching and research with work as a clinical audiologist.  She directs a longstanding research program in effects of hearing aids, particularly for older listeners.  Her specific interests include use of signal-processing amplification which affects acoustic speech cues and how those changes interact with listener age and cognitive status.  Recent collaborative projects include older listeners’ perception of segmental and prosodic cues to speech transmitted via hearing aids and/or cochlear implants; consequences of loss of spectral (pitch) selectivity; and how regional dialect differences affect speech recognition.  Dr. Souza is an Associate Editor for the Journal of Speech, Language and Hearing Research and a past editorial board member for Ear and Hearing, Trends in Amplification and the Journal of the American Academy of Audiology.  She serves on the Psychoacoustic and Perception Technical Committee of the ASA.  Her work has been supported by the National Institutes of Deafness and Communication Disorders and the Department of Veterans Affairs.
